CAT exam getting bigger n tougher

The big CAT(Comman Entrance Test)just got bigger. The test which has the power to change the lives of those who clearit rather dramatically, has attracted a mind-boggling 2.76 lakh candidates this year. They will be vying for a pitiful 2,000 seats (approx) in seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) including the newest addition in Shillong.

The number of candidates appearing for CAT, to be held on November 16, has risen 15% from last year’s 2.4 lakh, according to an IIM-Bangalore official. An acceptance offer this year will go to just one in 138 candidates against one in 120 last year making CAT one of the toughest competitive tests in the world.

These candidates will write the CAT in 24 cities across the country. The IIM-B will administer the CAT for Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore in 68 centres across these three cities.

The number of centres for CAT has been steadily rising over the years. In 2006, CAT was conducted in 16 centres in Bangalore. The following year, it rose to 20. This year the number of centres has remained constant. “The number of applicants (locally) has not risen drastically to warrant the setting up of another centre,” Subhashish Gupta, chairperson admissions, IIM-B.

Recently, the IIM-B announced that it has enhanced its intake by 75 for its post-graduate programmes(PGP) and an equal nummber for its one year executive PGP.

The CAT is conducted jointly by IIMs.However, each IIM follows its own admission process independent of others. Each IIM admits students independently and also decides on their own for various areas-CAT scores, group discussions, interviews etc.

All the candidates who have taken the CAT 2008 will receive their CAT score cards by mid-January 2009 from the IIMs to which they had sent their application forms. Besides the IIMs, the CAT scores will be accepted by 102 non-IIMs. The three-hour test will start at 10 am across the country.
