"Slumdog" makers buy flat for homeless Slumdog child star

Once under fire for not doing enough for its impoverished Indian child stars, the makers of "Slumdog Millionaire" said on Wednesday they had bought a flat for one of them whose Mumbai shanty home had been demolished.

Director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson flew into Mumbai after pictures of Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali picking ACthrough the debris of their homes -- torn down by the civic authorities as illegal -- were splashed in the media.

Smiling and hugging the children, Boyle said a home had been bought for Ismail, 9, who played the character of Salim as a child. He added they would soon buy one for Ali as well, who plays the young Latika.

Boyle, who came under fire for not doing enough for the children who lived in squalor despite the film's success, blamed the media for raising the families' expectations.

"Inevitably, the tension and pressure is media generated," he said, after greeting Ali and Ismail with a hug.

"They were given access to a world, an extraordinary and glamorous world, and they understandably want their lives to be completely transformed," said Boyle.

"The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust," he said.

The "Jai Ho" trust, named after the film's award-winning track, and set up by Boyle and Colson, is meant to pay for the education and basic living costs of Ismail and Ali until they turn 18.

Boyle, whose rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing in a TV game show scooped eight Academy Awards earlier this year, said he was pushing the trust to find a place for Ali before the monsoon rains, due around June 10.

A director for the trust said the apartment for Ismail was "comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school" and cost "upwards of 2 million rupees" ($42,000).

"We have been trying to accelerate the process of re-housing the families, and one of the reasons we set up the trust is to deal with emergencies like this," said Colson.

Boyle and Colson last month also donated 500,000 pounds to a non-profit organisation to support a programme for children in a slum in central Mumbai, where the film was largely shot.

In February, the state housing authority said it would give the two children apartments, but the families have not heard from them, said Rafik Qureshi, Ali's father.

"The kids have done such a good job. They haven't got anything. See where the kids are staying," he said.

Photo Feature: LTTE Prabhakar Still Alive

This is the photograph that is circulating in websites in big way. Sources say that this picture was released by LTTE troupes those are still alive. But many also say that this picture is a morphed one. How can Prabhakaran see his own death news on television? There are many those say that the dead body identified by Sri Lankan soldiers is not of LTTE Prabhakarn but only his look alike and hence the real tiger is enjoying the news. Looking in close, many get that doubt as well. Adding to this, if the photograph is assumed to be a morphed one, then the News Paper ‘Dinamani’ that is in the hand of Prabhakaran has the title ‘Prabhakaran Veera Maranam’ in Tamil. So, is Prabharan’s death still a fiction? That has to be unleashed with convincing facts yet.

Nobody has the passion to buy a stake in KKR: SRK

Nobody has the passion and heart to buy a stake in Kolkata Knight Riders,” declares Shah Rukh Khan, defying the claim made by mystery blogger Fake IPL Player that the star had found investors for the team. To HT City’s request to comment on Fake IPL Player, SRK simply replies, “I don’t do fake.”

When he returned from South Africa almost two weeks ago, Shah Rukh had sounded dejected over KKR’s performance. But his passion for his team and the game seems to have become even stronger. “You don’t need just money to run KKR — we have our wonderful sponsors for that — what you need is love, and in that department I am the king,” he states.

Rumours that he wants to wash his hands of cricket are just that, he contends. “The pressure to perform is greater now, but when you see Deccan and Bangalore turn it around in a year… I’m sure so can we.” UK-based brand valuation firm Intangible Business, in collaboration with MTI Consulting, has declared KKR the richest IPL team valued at $22 million.

“The valuation makes me smile a bit, [but] it will make me happy when our team provides value to our supporters on the field and makes them proud to be with KKR,” says Shah Rukh. He has a special promise for kids: “I want to promise them again this year… that the KKR shirts will be smaller for them in 2010, but they will never feel small wearing them as supporters.”

As for the performance, he takes the entire responsibility upon himself. “We don’t hate failure enough,” says the man who has seldom failed as a star. “The blame should completely rest on my shoulders. It’s my duty to overcome this year’s performance… how, when, who… too many details for an interview... I don’t like being a loser and I’ll pragmatically and passionately turn this around. Inshallah.”

As of now, it’s back to being Rizwan Khan in Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, and SRK calls it one of his most intricate roles so far. “It is an exercise in bringing technique and emotions together.”

Shahrukh Khan in talks to play an anti-hero in Dhoom 3

After the super-success of the villain (John Abraham in Dhoom, and Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2), the part of the anti- hero has become the most coveted role in B-Town.

Every now and then, big names are being tossed around as being nearly signed for this role and now the latest rumour is that Shah Rukh Khan will feature in the role in this action thriller.

A source who claims to be in the know swears, "Yash Raj Films have been going through a lull period as none of their on-the-floor movies or their completed ones are generating any curiosity from the buyers as well as the audiences. SRK has always been a quick-fix solution for the Chopras.

When- ever their mega boat is rocked, good friend Adi Chopra calls on SRK and the actor steps in to bail out his dost." This last happened with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Now an insider claims claim that SRK has been approached by the banner to play the main villain in Dhoom 3, "Last week, SRK was called in for a tentative one-line narration; he was impressed and agreed to be part of the film."

Although one wonders when SRK will find the time to finish this film, which reportedly starts some time next year. SRK is very charged about his superhero flick and Don 2, which he wants to finish in 2010, along with his home production Happy New Year, to be directed by Farah Khan, so where is the time to fit in Dhoom 3? It is also not clear who will direct D:3 as Sanjay Gadhvi has had a fallout with YRF."

Slumdog star Rubina Ali spends night on hospital floor

Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali had to spend a night sleeping on the floor of an Indian hospital after her slum home was bulldozed. The nine-year-old star suffered from flu after spending two days homeless on the streets of Mumbai. She was taken to the nearby Bhaba hospital, but because there were no beds left she had to lie in the arms of her aunt Mohidin on the floor.

“Rubina was out in the hot sun when they knocked down our home and then was exposed to the humid night,” the Sun quoted dad Rafiq Qureshi as saying. “It was extremely stressful for all my family and I am not surprised that this caught up with my daughter,” he added. However, Rubina has been discharged from hospital and is currently staying in a cramped House.

Sri Lankan military releases photo of LTTE chief Prabhakaran

With a pro-LTTE website raising questions over his death, the Sri Lankan army today said Velupillai Prabhakaran's body has been found.

"Prabhakaran's body was found near Nandikadal lagoon (in the No Fire Zone)," military spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara told PTI.

He said Prabhakaran was in uniform and there were bullet wounds on his head.

Military officials, giving details of the encounter in which the LTTE chief was killed yesterday, said that Prabhakaran and his two top commanders, Pottu Amman and sea Tiger chief Soosai, drove out of their hideout in an armoured vehicle escorted by his armed cadres in an ambulance.

They tried to drive through the security cordon of army, triggering a 2-hour battle which ended when troops targeted the vehicle with a rocket and later took out the bodies.

Prabhakaran's body, the officials said yesterday, bore burn marks apparently due to the direct impact of the rocket on the vehicle which was carrying the LTTE chief.

However, the pro-rebel Tamilnet website claimed that Prabhakaran was still "alive and safe".

"I wish to inform the global Tamil community distressed witnessing the final events of the war that our beloved leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is alive and safe," LTTE's International Relations head S Pathmanathan was quoted as saying by the website.

Pak cricketer Ijaz Ahmed gets bail

Ijaz Ahmed, the former Pakistan batsman, was freed on bail on Tuesday ahead of his trial for fraud charges. Ijaz was arrested in March for allegedly issuing false cheques to a client and he was relieved to get bail after spending six weeks in jail.

A case had been registered against Ijaz Ahmed for issuing two bogus cheques of Rs10m and Rs0.5m respectively to two local property dealersSenior lawyer Ashtar Ausaf has moved the bail application before the LHC on behalf of Ijaz.

"We will now follow the case as I am in the right and will fight until my name is cleared," Ijaz told AFP. "The last three months have been nightmarish. The PCB was supportive as they believed my innocence and did not disturb my job [at the Pakistan cricket academy]. I am thankful to them for supporting me."

Ijaz had pleaded his innocence and said he would take the accusers to court. He was arrested on March 26, but was taken to hospital after suffering a bout of asthma and breathing problems

Ijaz played 60 Tests and 250 ODIs and was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 World Cup. Following his retirement from international cricket, he had been working as the fielding coach of the national team for the last few months. He was earlier on the selection committee and had also served as senior coach at the National Cricket Academy.

LTTE chief Prabhakaran 'shot dead'

The chief of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Velupillai Prabhakaran, has been killed in an offensive by thesri lankan military Sri Lankan military, reports say.

The announcement on Sri Lanka's state television came shortly after the military said it had surrounded Prabhakaran in a tiny patch of jungle in the north-east, the BBC reported.

The head of the Sri Lankan army Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka said the military had defeated the rebels and "liberated the entire country".

"Today we finished the work handed to us by the president to liberate the country from the LTTE," Gen Fonseka said in the broadcast. He said troops were working to identify Prabhakaran's body from among the dead.

The broadcast quoted military officials as saying Prabhakaran, 54, was killed along with two of his deputies.

It said Prabhakaran, his intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Soosai, the head of the rebels' naval wing, were shot dead in an ambush in the Mullivaikal district while trying to escape the war zone in an ambulance.

Earlier, at least three senior rebel leaders were killed, including Prabhakaran's eldest son, Charles Anthony, the military said.

Sri Lankan military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara confirmed Prabhakaran's death, saying 250 Tamil Tigers were also killed overnight.

The government's information department also sent news of Prabhakaran's death by text message to mobile phones across the country, according to the BBC report, adding that the death of the Tiger supremo could not be confirmed independently as reporters have been barred from going to the area.

More than 70,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the brutal insurgency lasting for 25 years.

On Sunday, four senior rebel leaders were killed in fighting, the army said.

They included the head of the Tigers" political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, the head of rebels" peace secretariat Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and a military leader known as Ramesh.

The latest claims cannot be verified as reporters are barred from the war zone.

If confirmed, Prabhakaran's death could signal the end of the nearly three decade-long civil-ethnic war that cost the island nation the lives of thousands of innocent civilians.

Meanwhile, injured civilians continue to leave Sri Lanka"s war zone to get medical care.

The movement of civilians out of the war zone comes as the LTTE conceded defeat after sending out suicide attackers as part of a last-ditch attempt to keep the military"s final assault at bay on the square kilometre they control.

"This battle has reached its bitter end. We have decided to silence our guns," the LTTE"s diplomatic chief, Selvarajah Pathmanathan, said in a statement posted on the pro-rebel web site www.TamilNet.com on Sunday

A day before, Sri Lanka"s President Mahinda Rajapaksa had declared victory after troops seized the entire coast for the first time since the war erupted in 1983.
